Called to Equip people to Serve by Growing Disciples of Jesus Christ

Devotion for March 8 by Shelly Saunders

For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.   Matthew 25: 35-36
This week’s focus word is serve.   Jesus here provides concrete, human examples of what serving might involve – giving, welcoming, clothing, caring, and visiting.  Other New Testament words with the same meaning are work, help, minister, prepare, and attend. You need only look around Our Savior’s to see dozens of different kinds of service. The Gospel writers and Saint Paul also paint a clear picture of the attitude behind the most fruitful acts of service, using such words as humble, grateful, willing, privilege, enthusiasm, eager, and honor.  Perhaps best of all, it’s all God powered!  Think for a moment of one person you know who ministers humbly, works eagerly, or gives gratefully.

Gracious God, open our minds as we ponder the idea of serving – serving you, serving our neighbor, serving the world.  Fill us with an inquiring attitude and a willingness to learn what you would have us know.
