Devotion
for March 9 by Shelly Saunders
Self- indulgence is like a guy with bald tires trying to climb an ice-covered hill in a Civic. We don’t have to imagine the results, because so many Hollywood stars and professional athletes play them out for us. We watch them climb, and we watch them slide back down again. Are there times when you’ve gotten lost in “It’s all about me” land? Service, on the other hand – ministry, help, love of neighbor – is like an ice road trucker with heavy chains. It’s a challenge, can be heavy and difficult work, but the hills are surmountable, the progress real. In service, love of God and love of neighbor join. Strength and grace flow to us in our relationship with the Creator. In grateful thanksgiving we serve others. Each act of service flows back to Jesus, completing the circle that sustains and renews all of creation. Lord, help us to turn out from ourselves, to see the neighbors who need our care, and to serve others in love and gratitude. |
