Called to Equip people to Serve by Growing Disciples of Jesus Christ

Devotion for March 10 by Shelly Saunders

When Jesus entered Peter’s house, he saw his mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever; he touched her hand, and the fever left her, and she got up and began to serve him.   Matthew 8:14-15

When is serving a bad idea?  In this verse, Peter’s mother-in-law offers a sensible example that many of us forget to follow.  She is too sick to serve, too tired, too weak, and so she rests.  Only after Jesus heals her does she rise to serve.  Peter’s mother-in-law then has an opportunity that none of us will ever have in this life.  She gets to serve Jesus directly, provide him food and drink and hospitality.  What pure joy to find herself whole again, and to be able to serve her healer in gratitude.  When God’s word and the Holy Supper strengthen us, when God’s grace and love pour through us in service to others, we cling to the assurance of Jesus that we are truly serving him.

Jesus, our Savior, remind us to wait for your strength and your healing touch.  Then, help us to serve your beloved children and your world with deep devotion.  How we would love to find you at our table, Lord.
